If you've perused the site of just about any big retailer within the past few weeks, chances are you've been greeted with one of those alerts after clicking on a listing.

That's because sites like Amazon are struggling to keep up with demand amid increases in order volumes and worker absences due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Things have reportedly gotten so dire that Amazon is trying to get customers to buy less from its site, going so far as to cancel its Mother's Day promotions, bury its popular Deals of the Day page, and run fewer ads on Google.
